The annual report of Twence Holding B.V. was approved in the shareholders' meeting held on 20 April 2023. Twence posted a positive net result (after tax) of €32.5 million over 2022. More than 68% of the €181.5 million turnover was generated by revenues from raw materials and energy.
"We managed to close 2022 with a great result. Half of this result will be paid out as dividend to the fifteen shareholder municipalities, which means it will flow back into the region. The other half will be used to speed up the process of making the region sustainable. Nevertheless, the market remains unpredictable. Unfortunately, 2023 is showing a very different picture. Energy prices have fallen, while costs have risen sharply. We will have to pull out all the stops to also deliver a great result in 2023."

Managing Director
By all accounts, 2022 was an extraordinary and turbulent year. The nitrogen crisis, the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis all created a great deal of uncertainty and had a direct impact on our business operations. The excellent financial result was largely attributable to high energy prices. On the other hand, inflation and scarcity drove prices up, and consequently increased costs.
Twence has set itself the goal of recovering as many raw materials as possible from waste, biomass and solar energy and to produce energy as a way of making an important contribution to the circular economy as well as the regional energy transition.
In 2022, 966,000 tonnes of waste crossed the Hengelo-Zenderen weigh-bridge. Nearly 200,000 tonnes of this was recovered in the form of raw materials such as metals, bottom ash, liquid CO₂, compost and fertiliser. Energy in the form of renewable heat and electricity was also produced to heat homes and buildings and to make production processes sustainable. This is equivalent to the energy consumption of approximately 217,000 households.
Together with shareholding municipalities, companies and educational institutes, Twence is exploring sustainable initiatives that directly contribute to a sustainable region. Concrete examples in 2022 include the realisation of the manure processing plant in Zenderen. A portion of the regional manure surplus will be processed into new raw materials and green gas. In other words, 100% circular agriculture. In doing so, Twence is making an important contribution to a future-proof agricultural sector, solving the nitrogen problem and reducing CO₂.
Another example is the heat supply to Grolsch, which enables Grolsch to largely switch from fossil energy to sustainable energy and reduce CO₂ emissions by 72%.
Twence started construction of the large-scale CO₂ capture plant in 2022, which will substantially reduce CO₂ emissions. The captured CO₂ will be used in liquid form in greenhouse horticulture. The plant will be ready by the end of 2023. Moreover, major steps have been taken in preparations for a Regional Heat Network Twente (RWT). With the available heat, Twence will be able to supply heat to another 100,000 household equivalents. This will yield annual savings of 125 million m³ of natural gas and 225,000 tonnes of CO₂.
