Our fossil raw materials are running out. That is why we are looking for alternatives for grey electricity, among other things. Twence is able to generate electricity in a sustainable way. We then bring that green energy to the region via the electricity grid.
At Twence, we produce sustainable electricity for approximately 135,000 households every year. That electricity is generated by, among other things, the energy that is released by our biomass and waste-to-energy plants and our composting and fermentation plant. We also generate sustainable energy from sunlight via our solar parks.
With the generation of sustainable electricity, Twence is making an important contribution to the ambition of the province of Overijssel to generate 20% of its own energy use sustainably by 2023. In addition, with our green electricity, we are also contributing to the regional sustainability targets as set out in the Regional Energy Strategy Twente
(REST).
Twence has three solar parks on its own grounds: solar parks Tienbunderweg and Boeldershoek-West and solar park 't Rikkerink on a former landfill site. We expect to put the Energy park Elhorst-Vloedbelt in Zenderen into operation in 2022. The solar parks at Twence house more than 100,000 solar panels that capture sunlight and convert it into green electricity. We then sell the generated electricity to energy suppliers or (local) energy cooperatives that will supply it to households and businesses via the electricity grid. The green electricity replaces grey electricity that is generated from fossil raw materials and reduces CO2 emissions this way.
In many of our plants, steam, heat and biogas are released. We convert this energy into green electricity by means of a turbine and generator. This is done, amongst other ways, in the waste-to-energy plant, the biomass power plant and the composting and fermentation plant. We also convert the biogas produced by our new manure valorisation plant into green gas for households in the area. You can read about how the different plants work in Our processes.
