The construction of Twence manure processing plant has commenced

After years of preparation, a positive verdict from the Council of State in October 2020, and a sufficient amount of manure contracts, the construction of manure processing plant Twence Zenderen can finally start in February.

Without manure there can be no plant. “Our patience has been tested over the last couple of years. After the positive verdict from the Council of State last October, our focus was on winning manure contracts. We are overjoyed that in a few months' time, and with the help of intermediaries, pig farmers and interest groups, we were able to win a sufficient amount of manure contracts which allowed us to finally start construction, says director Marc Kapteijn.”

Sustainability and vitality
Manure is one of the biomass flows that Twence is able to process into raw materials and energy. In Twente, parts of Salland and the Achterhoek alone there is a sizable manure surplus. The processing of manure does not only contribute to a vital countryside and healthy future for agriculture, but also to the Regional Energy Strategy (RES). This is because sustainable energy is released during processing.

100% circular agriculture
“This is the perfect example of circular agriculture. A unique opportunity for both the region and farmers”, says Arjan Bonthuis, pig farmer and chairman of LTO Noord.

The plant can process 250,000 tons of manure. This will create green gas for 3,000 homes, while at the same time recovering scarce resources: therefore it is 100% circular agriculture. This is an important step towards sustainability in the region!

Start of construction
Currently all the building preparations have been put in place. Actual construction will commence in February. It is estimated that the plant will be fully operational by May 2022.
