At the Boeldershoek facility, we are building a plant that will convert biogas from organic waste into green gas (1.9 million m³). This is equivalent to the gas consumption of 1,900 households.
Natural gas reduction
Organic waste from the region is converted into biogas at our Composting & Digestion plant. At the moment, we are still converting that biogas into electricity and heat (hot water). We are going to build a plant that will convert the biogas that is produced there into green gas. The green gas (1.9 million m³) is fed into the natural gas grid, thereby reducing the need for natural gas. This is equivalent to the gas consumption of 1,900 households. As a result of this sustainable step, the region will become less dependent on natural gas. Additionally, we will soon make our composting and digestion plant virtually gas-free, and reduce nitrogen and CO₂ emissions.
What is green gas?
Green gas is upgraded biogas. Green gas has the same properties as natural gas, this is achieved by upgrading and cleaning the biogas. Therefore, it can be added to the standard gas grid. With green gas in the gas grid, less (fossil) natural gas is needed for heating in homes and industries. This cuts down on nitrogen and CO₂ emissions and is therefore better for the climate. It is important for the climate that the use of natural gas is reduced as much as possible, for example through electric heating and heat networks. In places where that is not possible and gas still remains necessary, renewable gases could be an alternative, such as green gas.

'Every banana peel or wood trimming that ends up in the VGF bin helps us make green gas – and that means using less natural gas. So proper separation really does help and contributes to a better climate.'
Rolf Nijboer, project manager Twence
'Municipalities are under pressure to meet their climate targets. By producing green gas, we enable municipalities to make their energy supply more sustainable and take steps towards achieving a fossil-free future.'
