A challenging year
2023 was a challenging year with uncertainties that had a direct impact on our business operations. External influences such as the wars in Ukraine and Gaza and political factors played an important role here. Lower energy revenues and inflation and shortages, which pushed up personnel and material costs, put pressure on the financial result. This was compounded by the nitrous oxide problems which negatively impacted results. Thanks to our focus and flexibility,
we ended the year with a positive result.

From waste to raw materials and energy
Twence has set itself the goal of recovering as many raw materials as possible from waste, biomass and solar energy and to produce energy as a way of making an important contribution to the circular economy as well as the regional energy transition. In 2023, 1.1 million tons (+8% compared to 2022) of waste and biomass crossed the weighbridges in Hengelo and Zenderen. Nearly 246,000 tons of this (+23% compared to 2022) was recovered in the form of raw materials, such as metals, bottom ash, liquid CO, compost and fertiliser. Waste, biomass and solar generated 709GWh of sustainable energy in the form of heat and electricity to heat homes and buildings and make production processes more sustainable. This is equivalent to the energy consumption of approximately 172,300 households.

Together towards a sustainable region
With cutting-edge technology and pioneering projects, Twence, together with its shareholder municipalities, aims to make the region even more sustainable. Construction of the large-scale CO2 capture plant, for example, is making steady progress. This reduces CO2 emissions and makes the chain more sustainable. The construction of solar park Elhorst-Vloedbelt in Zenderen has also started. With 24,000 solar panels, some 3,800 households can soon be supplied with electricity.

Marc Kapteijn, general director: "In the end, we managed to close 2023 with a great result. Plenty of challenges await us in 2024 as well. The course we have set for the coming years remains unchanged: we are working together for a sustainable region. Our aim is to expand cooperation in the Euroregion, so that we can convert even more waste into sustainable energy and raw materials on a regional level.
