First Recycled Bicycle Path in Twente

The renovated circular cycle path between Denekamp and Nordhorn has been put into use. This marks the first road surface in the Twente Region to be constructed with 100% recyclable materials. The cycle path has been constructed by Abbink Boekelo Wegenbouw using Ecofalt: a sustainable alternative to asphalt. The newly developed foundation consists of recycled rubble materials from the Twee 'R' Recycling Group and bottom ash from Twence. This regional circular collaboration has resulted in a fully sustainable cycle path.

Recycled and Bio-Based
The cycle path along the N342 needed to be replaced in several areas. Divided into four zones, this road surface has been renovated over a total length of 770 metres with recyclable materials. The basis for the new cycle path was the previously existing asphalt. The road has been broken up, and the rubble has been removed and upgraded to high-quality materials. The Ecofalt coating is an innovative alternative to asphalt, in which the petroleum-based substance (bitumen) has been largely replaced by bio-based products. This means that fewer fossil resources are required. In contrast to regular asphalt, Ecofalt is produced at ambient temperatures, so heating with natural gas is not necessary. The foundation consists of recycled rubble from the obsolete cycle path, with the concrete fraction largely being replaced by clean bottom ash.

Working Together On Sustainability
Thanks to our collaboration, a substantial step has been taken in making the regional road network more sustainable. Abbink Boekelo Wegenbouw produces the sustainable asphalt (Ecofalt) used for the construction of this cycle path. Twee “R” Recycling Group is responsible for rubble recycling and supplies the foundation mix as a base for the road surface. After incineration of residual waste and recovery of valuable materials, the clean bottom ash from Twence serves as raw material in this foundation mix. This saves on the use of primary raw materials such as sand and gravel. On this project alone, the annual gas consumption of four households is reduced by using Ecofalt instead of regular asphalt. As a result, the CO2 reduction for this project is approx. 13,000 kg.
